Miss Fuller’s Fantastic First Grade

The first graders came into this year smiling and ready to take on first grade. I am so proud of how hard they have been working these first few months of school. In ELA we have been reading two favorites, Stellaluna and Frog and Toad. Students have been learning how to determine the main story elements for both of the stories. Our math class has been focused on addition and subtraction strategies. Students have been working on mastering their fact fluency with our holey cards. I am so impressed with how fast they have been able to get with this!

In social studies, we have been learning about our community and the different rules and laws we need to follow. We also began our government unit. One focus was voting. We held our own mini vote on our favorite pets. We sent home ballots to families and they got to choose between a dog, horse, or cat. Dog won by a landslide!!! We also learned about different government services and invited Officer Hunter to come in and talk about his job and how he helps to keep us and everyone safe.

Our science curriculum starts the year off with learning about animals. We have been learning how animals can camouflage to protect themselves. Students got to camouflage their own moths to hide around the classroom. We were so excited to show them off at Open House!

I am looking forward to watching this fantastic group continue to grow this year!
