Forth Grade Happenings
It’s hard to believe that we are now into the month of October. It’s been an exciting start to the new school year. We spent quite a few days taking benchmark tests in both ELA and math, but with that behind us, we have settled into our core curriculum quite nicely. In ELA, we are reviewing citing evidence, learning new vocabulary, and learning parts of grammar. In math we have been learning about place value. The students are pretty adept at identifying millions on the place value chart and amaze us when they can read huge strings of numbers. They are doing amazing! They have grown so much with their speed to finish the “Holey cards”. Keep it up! We are using a new social studies program called “Studies Weekly.” So far we have learned about inquiries. What are they? Why are they important to history? The students can answer those questions. We are also learning about “primary and secondary” sources. It’s pretty fascinating to see them light up when they correctly identify which is which. That leaves science. We are using a program called Mystery Science. Students have learned about their muscular and skeletal systems; they are also learning about how their eyes see in the dark. Cool stuff!
It’s not all classwork, classwork, classwork! We have gone on a field trip to the local historical museum. We saw the BEAUTIFUL quilts and other artifacts donated by community members. By the time you read this, we will have gone to Newcomb Central School to watch the Seagle Festival Children’s Opera “Dragon’s Breath”. Soccer practice has started and they can’t wait for their first game. Soon they will be able to work with Ms. Smith in selecting a musical instrument. So, GREAT things are happening in Fourth Grade.
