Fall fun in the fifth grade

Fifth grade has been off to a fantastic start this school year! In science, we've been learning about ecosystems and how to keep them healthy. We had the opportunity to walk the school’s nature trail to identify local producers, consumers, and decomposers. The class has almost completed our first reading unit where we read a very engaging book titled Night of the Spadefoot Toads, focusing on plot, theme, character development, and setting. Students are also working on a narrative writing unit that focuses on telling a detailed short story that includes conflict, resolution, and dialogue. In math, the class has been working to develop a deeper understanding of place value, as well as multiplication and division of whole numbers. Finally, in social studies, we have been learning about and practicing the inquiry process and how to research a topic for valid information that supports a claim. We’ve also had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Ferrone, who worked with the class on a technology project that brought student drawings into 3-D using a program on iPads. Overall, since the beginning of the school year, the class has worked hard to develop a strong classroom community where we maintain a growth mindset and respect,
encourage, and support one another. We’re looking forward to a fun and busy year ahead!
