Learning Together in Fifth Grade
Fifth graders have been building a classroom community where they can work together and support each other while collaborating on projects or learning new skills. Students often share ideas and help each other problem—solve.
In math, students have been learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers. We have also been practicing how to work through word problems and draw models of what is happening in those word problems.
In ELA, fifth graders have been reading about individuals and groups of people who have advocated for freedoms and rights throughout history. Students focus on new vocabulary, character development, theme, and central ideas & key supporting details when they read.
In science, students have learned about Earth’s systems and how they interact with each other. For example, the biosphere (living things) depends on the hydrosphere (water) to keep it alive. They also learned how the actions of humans can impact Earth’s systems, both positively and negatively. Mr. Brown included lessons on Earth’s systems that connected to the current wildfires affecting California. Students learned about the Santa Ana winds and how the winds are affected by landforms.
